FIRST THOUGHT: Beauty Sleep
What I remember from the 1959 movie Pillow Talk, starring one of my favorite firecracker actresses, Doris Day, were the outfits, particularly the clothes she’d slip on for, well, a little pillow talk. There was an icy-blue, lacey chemise, which Doris layered with a more prudish matching dressing gown as she started her morning. Then there were nighttime numbers featuring green silk, frilly pink satin, pale-pink fleece and pastel yellow. Today, examine your PJ situation. If it’s in as pitiful shape as mine, you have my permission to do some online shopping for new sleepwear while at work today. That’s my plan!
WOMEN IN NUMBERS: 14 Percent
OK, admittedly, some days, some of us just end up watching Gone With the Wind and falling asleep on the couch amid chicken-wing bones and Halloween candy wrappers. I’ve always had a fear that if ever my house caught fire, it’d be when I’m at my most embarrassing. That’s why it kind of surprises me that, according to Sleep.org, 14 percent of American women doze in their birthday suits. Men feel even more confident (surprise, surprise!), with about 31 percent opting to sleep in the buff. And that’s the naked truth!
WOMAN TO WATCH: Ashley Merrill, Founder and CEO of Lunya Sleepwear
If the idea of boring PJs and stodgy nightgowns is putting you to sleep, wake up! There’s a point to this! I want to tell you about a designer who will make you doze off peacefully once you slip on her sleepwear. Ashley Merrill created Lunya Sleepwear to give us hardworking ladies the most relaxed sleep of our lives.
Ashley designed Lunya Sleepwear with getting great zzzz’s in mind. And her ingenious business idea was sparked late one night when she realized she deserved more comfortable and flattering sleepwear than her husband’s oversized T-shirt and boxer shorts. Fed up, Ashley knew she wanted to be an “effortlessly cool, confident and comfortable woman,” even when she was getting her 40 winks.
If you’ve ever shopped for sleepwear, you know there are two categories for women: uncomfortable lingerie that supermodels pretend is comfy to sleep in, and your great-great granny’s fleece PJs, which may or may not come with built-in feet.
That’s what’s so great about Lunya Sleepwear. It shuns all the frumpy, uncomfortable and unflattering garments of the past in favor of sleepwear with a fresh, modern perspective. And it starts with a complete and total dedication to real comfort. Ashley’s sleep-intelligent designs include flat seams to minimize friction, and straps are made to stay put, so you’re not waking up in the middle of the night to adjust your sleepwear. The unique fabric blends are soft and durable. But my favorite characteristic of Lunya is that the garments can be length-adjusted, so us shorties out there can finally give up the search for pajamas that don’t sweep up grit from the floor. If you’re a sweaty Betty, no worries! Lunya’s breathable, antimicrobial options are definitely a good call.
Each piece—from sleep shirts, shorts, pants and rompers to washable silk sleep dresses, cozy bralettes and even girl-friendly sleep briefs—is designed in-house, with Ashley trying on every sample to ensure the best quality and comfort before sending garments to production.
Since we spend more than one-third of our lives sleeping, it’s imperative to don clothing that enhances sleep, especially since a great rest at night can determine the quality of our whole day.
Thanks, Ashley, for providing women with sleepwear that makes us feel confident and comfy enough to take a deep breath, relax and simply get a good night’s sleep!
QUITE THE QUOTE
I’ll send you off today with this insightful quote from Arianna Huffington:
“The current male-dominated model of success—which equates success with burnout, sleep deprivation and driving yourself into the ground—isn’t working for women, and it’s not working for men either!”
This is Melinda Garvey signing off until next time. Remember, ladies, empowered women empower other women. Share On the Dot so more women can have a voice. Thanks for getting ready with us.
